Tallinn Jewish Heritage
5 hours
The tour covers the major highlights of Old town but also the history of the Holocaust on Estonian soil.
After meeting in the port the tour will go to the old town with the heritage of the middle ages. You will enjoy the view from the observation points, see the churches and the Toompea castle.
The tour will be continued by a drive to the countryside.
Going out of Tallinn to the north-west you will see the suburbs of the Estonian capital, enjoy a view of the Baltic Sea from a 40 meter high cliff called Rannamoisa or the Hamlet’s cliff.
Next enjoy a stop at the manor house that belonged to Count von Benkendorf – the founder of the first secret service in the Russian Empire. The manor is built on the high bank of the river next to one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Estonia – Keila Joa.
The next stop in Klooga deathcamp. You will pay respects to the mass grave of the killed prisoners and see the Memorial telling of the sad history of the place.
When coming back to Tallinn we will visit the Synagogue (Beit Bella Synagogue) and learn about the modern life of the Jewish community in Estonia. Consecrated in 1885, the historical synagogue building in Tallinn was destroyed during WWII. Construction of our new building began in 2005, and the synagogue was opened in 2007.
The present synagogue is one of the most unusual sacral buildings in Tallinn; its acclaimed modern design is combined with traditional architectural features of a synagogue.
