Meet your guide on the cruise pier and walk along the sea-front to Tyholmen. Tyholmen is the oldest part of Arendal. It is located on the small peninsula in the southeast corner of the city and offers charming houses and alleys. Tyholmen was granted nature reserve status in 1975 and is known for its efforts to combine preservation with adaptation to modern use.
Tyholmen consists of an 'upper' and a 'lower' part, where merchants and shipowners lived near the sea, while craftsmen, sailors and day labourers lived in the smaller houses up on the hill. Today the lower part is mainly hotels, cafes and restaurants, while the upper part is still mainly residential.
Take the new Glass Lift to ascend to the viewpoint and enjoy the bird-eye-view of Arendal. Descend to the Old Town and walk to the Trinity Church for an exterior view and then walk through Tyholmen Arendal's Old Town to the City Hall.
The old Town Hall, originally built as a private home for one of the wealthier families in Arendal, was located where the harbour is today from 1844 until 2005, when it moved its headquarters to the city centre. Today, various cultural organizations have their offices in the building. It is the tallest and second largest wooden building in Norway from the empire time period. It was built in the years 1812-1815.
Enter the Arendal Old Town Hall to explore the old historical rooms – used for the parties of the socially elite during Arendal’s golden era. Hear the stories of the owners, and few one of the most extensive portrait collections in all of Norway.
After visiting the Old Town Hall proceed to Flyt Restaurant overlooking the marina for a refreshment (at your own cost).
The program ends with a leisurely 15-minutes walk back to the ship.
